About the performers

The Cipelahq Ehpicik, also known as the Thunderbird Women, are a powerful group of Wabanaki women singers made up of more than twenty members, ranging in age from early teens to grandmothers in their early seventies. They drum and sing for the people as a form of healing and as a way to remain connected to their ancestors. Barbara Paul, the group’s lead, explains, “The drum is the heartbeat of our people.”
Through sharing their songs, chants, and teachings, the Cipelahq Ehpicik help educate the public and demonstrate that Wabanaki culture remains strong and vibrant. They wear traditional skirts adorned with colorful ribbons and fabrics. The Thunderbird Women have drummed outside the homes of those who are sick or dying and have also provided songs and drumming at funerals, offering comfort and support to the community.
